The volunteer firefighters who lost their homes to the bushfire that devastated Pericoe and Kiah in south east NSW. Vicki Redmond, Tony Larkings and Errol McGovern are among the hundreds of firefighters and brigade volunteers who lost their own homes in the bushfires that consumed millions of hectares and destroyed thousands of homes across Australia between June 2019 and February 2020. Errol McGovern has been captain of the Kiah Rural Fire Service brigade on the New South Wales far south coast for over 30 years. He was helping to defend his daughter’s house when his own home, which has been in the family for four generations, burnt to the ground. Towamba Rural Fire Service volunteers Vicki Redmond and Tony Larkings lost their ‘forever home’ in Pericoe just days before heavy rain brought an end to the devastating bushfire season.
