Tennessee Officials Need To Lay Off Volkswagen, Which Wants a Union

Support our channel, become a patron and help us build a better Nation:   / tytnation   Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and U.S. Senator Bob Corker, also from Tennessee, are expressing opposition to the possibility of Volkswagen unionizing the workforce at its Chatanooga assembly plant. Volkswagen officials have expressed a desire to unionize the plant under representation of the United Auto Workers in order to implement German style workplace councils which negotiate workplace issues. Haslam and Corker have expressed opposition, saying that if unionization goes through, it will hurt the competitiveness of other auto plants in the state and region, as well as the region's ability to attract new manufacturers. Despite the politicians' protests, the UAW has collected enough signatures, and if Volkswagen's Advisory Board approves, the plant's workers will formally be represented by the union, which would negotiate wages, while workplace issues would be handled by the works council. For a works council to be formed, the workplace is required to have a union in place under US law.
