"유럽 코로나 확진자 5천만명 넘어...6대주 가운데 처음" The COVID-19 tally in Europe has surpassed 50-million cases... becoming the first region in the world to cross that grim mark. A number of European countries are reimposing restriction measures, while the UK has declared an end to its lockdown. Yoon Jung-min reports. Europe became the first region in the world to cross 50-million COVID-19 cases, according to a Reuters tally on Monday. It says the more contagious Delta variant spurred a record surge in daily infections, adding that the region is seeing a million new infections about every eight days. And the latest 25-million cases were added much faster than the first 25-million. Following recent spikes, a number of European countries are implementing COVID-19 restrictions again. France requires a health pass to prove immunization at a wide array of venues, while the Netherlands reimposed work-from-home guidelines. Greece will require customers at indoor restaurants, bars and cafes... to prove they have been vaccinated. The UK, however, ended its COVID-19 lockdown restrictions on Monday, calling it "Freedom Day" despite a recent surge in new cases. It has lifted mandatory mask wearing indoors, and rules on keeping distance from each other in most places. Nightclubs also reopened. This comes even though the country recorded over 50-thousand new COVID-19 cases last Friday, and continues to add thousands of new daily infections. Italy is also seeing a resurgence, adding over 3-thousand new cases on Sunday. This follows thousands of fans pouring out onto the streets of Rome last week... to celebrate their national team winning the Euro 2020 tournament.
