Change Oil Not Lifters

Change Oil Not Lifters

A common mistake is replacing noisy lifters without first changing the oil. Lifters rarely wear out, but contaminated oil (dirty, aerated, sludge) can cause the lifters to become noisy. From the Owner's Manual: Upon start-up, a metallic ticking may occur. Run engine for 5 minutes. If noise continues, run engine at mid throttle for 20 minutes. If noise persists, take engine to your local Rehlko (Kohler) authorized dealer. Rehlko (Kohler) Small Engine Oil is formulated for small engines and contains the anti-foaming agents necessary for use with hydraulic lifters. The most common cause of hydraulic lifter noise is excess service intervals. The service manual indicates 100 hours or 1 year (annually), whichever comes first. 100 hours is the MAXIMUM service interval...meaning there are variables that require the oil to be changed sooner...perhaps as soon as 50 hours. Short run cycles, excessively hot or cold ambient temperatures, use of PCMO (auto) or low quality oil, excessively dusty/dirty conditions, high duty cycles; all contribute to deterioration of the engine oil. Oil analysis is the most accurate method of determining safe maximum service intervals. PLEASE READ THE SERVICE MANUAL AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS!
