Kulala Ovyo means "Messin' Around"! It's an HIV/AIDS awareness comedy that teachers young people how to protect themselves and others from HIV/AIDS and lead a healthy life. "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you." --Oscar Wilde Messin' Around is an AIDS comedy. Yes, you read that right. Loosely based on La Ronde, a comedy about syphilis by the 19th century Austrian playwright Arthur Schnitzler, it has been transposed into the key of HIV/AIDS and translated into Swahili. It's my belief that laughter is one of the most effective means to raise AIDS awareness. When an audience sympathizes with this story’s affable characters, it’s not hard to see the humor in their unfortunate situation. Only when people see themselves reflected in others’ actions and dangerous behavior can they change their own. The film Messin' Around has a real capacity to save lives. I feel that even if one life is saved by our film, it will have been worth the effort.
