Now imagine the Nereids - fifty sea-nymphs, daughters of the wise and old man of the sea himself, Nereus. They were goddesses of the sea's rich bounty, and served as the protectors of sailors and fishermen, unfailingly coming to the aid of any soul lost or in distress. Each of the fifty Nereids represented a unique facet of the sea - from the briny depths, to the sea foam, sand, rocks, waves, currents, and even the skills possessed by seafarers. Together they dwelt with their beloved father, in a splendid silvery grotto at the bottom of the Aegean Sea. Though there was no official leader of the Nereids, Thetis was known to be their foremost representative, commanding an illustrious prestige among them. As the queen of the sea, Amphitrite held a pre-eminent position in the court of Poseidon as his wife. The Nereids' primary role, however, was to serve as Poseidon's attendants, and they were frequently seen in his company. In ancient art, they were depicted as beautiful, young maidens, sometimes running with small dolphins or fish in their hands, or gracefully riding on the backs of dolphins, and other sea creatures that roam the ocean. They were regarded as the benevolent figures of the sea, helping to guide sailors and fishermen who were lost or in distress, and protecting the ocean and its creatures with eternal vigilance. Their reputation as the protectors of sailors and fishermen was exemplary and earned them the respect and admiration of all who sailed the seas. To express gratitude for the Nereids, most Ancient Greek fishing ports and harbours would have a shrine or similar structure dedicated to the daughters of Nereus.
