Dreyer, The Passion of Joan of Arc was heavily censored before it's release in 1928. The original negative was apparently destroyed by fire, a second negative reedited by Dreyer from alternate takes was also thought lost to fire. For more than a half-century the film was only known in mutilated copies, or in a sonorized version that made numerous changes to the original. Then, in 1981 an original nitrate Danish copy, complete and in very good condition, was discovered in Sweden. The present version was restored from the 2K scan of the duplicate negative made from the mentioned nitrate copy by The Danish Film Institute. It was set in 20 frames per second, for a more natural pacing, as originally intended by the director. At the time of it's initial release The Passion of Joan of Arc was presented with various pieces of music performed live. In fact, there were a score selected by Carl Theodor Dreyer, featuring mostly medieval liturgical music. However, due to it's timeless peculiarity, this film has been presented with many different scores. Here, it is accompanied by original music composed and performed by experimental musicians Thiago Mello and Santiago Beis, processing sound fragments of old vinyl recordings resulting on a soundscape that not only dialogues with Dreyer's imagery but suggests new narrative perspectives.
