The film was directed by Shigeru Miyamoto and produced by John A. Davis of DNA Productions. The score was composed by John Powell. It is the first of many Super Mario film adaptions by Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, and Games Animation Inc. PRODUCTION: The film idea was brought up in March 2002, when Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon approached Games Animation Inc., O Entertainment, and DNA Productions with plans to make a CGI Mario movie. Plans with Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing, and Nintendo CEO Shigeru Miyamoto began in April 2002, and the animation at DNA Productions and Games Animation Inc. began in May. A trailer was shown for DVD movie previews on August 29th, 2003, with the 2003 DVD releases of "Sonic The Hedgehog" (2001), and with the DVD release of "Clockstoppers" (2002). RELEASE: The film was premiered at the Paramount Backlot Theater on June 9th, 2004, and was theatrically released on June 12th, 2004 in the United States. Home video and DVD releases were released on August 20th, 2004. RECEPTION: BOX OFFICE The film opened with "Garfield: The Movie" on June 12th, and it received massive critical acclaim upon release, and became an incredible box office success, grossing $580.6 million, against a $75 million budget. CRITICAL RESPONSE Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 92% "Certified Fresh" approval rating based on 84 critics, with an average rating of 9.2/10. Its critical consensus reads: "Packed with action themes and a dramatic tone of sequences, "The Super Mario Movie" is a perfect film adaption to a beloved gaming franchise." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 98 out of 100 based on reviews by 58 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".
