There were extraordinary scenes in Libya today where the Prime Minister was greeted as hero by the Libyan people. David Cameron and the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, who led the international military action against the Gaddafi regime are the first Western leaders to visit the country. At a joint press conference with the leadership of the rebel National Transitional Council in a Tripoli hotel, Mr Cameron said he was proud of the role Britain had played. The trip comes as fighting continues around remaining strongholds of the Gaddafi regime and while the hunt continues for the dictator. Gaddafi was ousted from power after 42 years by the uprising which began in February.
