Resident Evil 4, released in Japan as Biohazard 4, is a third-person survival horror video game developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and published by Capcom. The story takes place six years after the events of Resident Evil 2. It features Agent Leon S. Kennedy, sent to Spain by the American government to rescue the daughter of the President of the United States, who has been kidnapped and held hostage by a mysterious cult. The game underwent a long and turbulent development period, during which several beta versions were canceled. As part of an agreement between Nintendo and Capcom, it was finally released on the GameCube in early 2005, where it was considered one of the console's major titles. It was then ported to the PlayStation 2 at the end of the year, Windows, and Wii in 2007, and then successively re-released on most platforms on the market, demonstrating its atypical longevity and continued success. Unanimously acclaimed upon its release, it was named "Game of the Year 2005" by several specialized websites and magazines. On the GameCube, it was ranked the 30th highest-rated game of all time by GameRankings. It also marked a profound change of approach in one of the most popular video game series since the 1990s.
