FBI investigating potential terrorism after Austin bar shooting leaves two dead and 14 wounded Authorities in Austin are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in the city’s popular Sixth Street entertainment district. The attack, which left two victims dead and 14 others wounded, is being scrutinized by the FBI for a potential nexus to terrorism. The incident began just before 2 a.m. outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden. According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect drove an SUV past the establishment several times before opening fire with a pistol from the vehicle’s window, targeting people on the patio and sidewalk. The gunman then parked the vehicle, exited with a rifle, and continued shooting at pedestrians. Responding officers confronted the shooter within a minute of the initial call. Three officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene. Law enforcement officials have identified the gunman as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal. Investigators found several indicators suggesting a possible link to extremist ideology. A law enforcement official stated that Diagne was wearing a sweatshirt with the words Property of Allah and another shirt featuring an Iranian flag. The shooting occurred one day after a major military strike by the United States and Israel against Iran. Of the 14 people injured, three were reported to be in critical condition. Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz noted that the rapid response by first responders likely prevented further loss of life. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson also praised the bravery of the officers and medics who arrived at the chaotic scene as bars were beginning to close for the night. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the ongoing investigation into the suspect’s background, including his mental health history and online activity, to determine a definitive motive. Residents and visitors have been advised that there will be an increased law enforcement presence in the downtown area as the investigation continues.
