Mid of train leaving STORYLINE: A medical train filled with people injured from China's May 12 earthquake left Jiangyou city on Wednesday afternoon to reduce pressure on overwhelmed hospitals in Sichuan province. Over 100 doctors and nurses from Jiangyou and Kumming city, the capital of neighbouring Yunan province, were to take care of 242 patients for treatment in their facilities. There has been a critical shortage of space and medical workers in hospitals in the quake affected areas after hundreds of patients were hospitalised following the quake. Taking patients to other province will give them a better chance of treatment. The quake survivors, most of them suffering from cranial trauma, broken bones and internal injuries but in stable condition to travel, are expected to reach the destination after 20 hours. The train is equipped with respirators, oxygen tanks and medicine to cope with emergency. Hundreds of doctors, nurses and army officers from Jiangyou city, 130 km away from capital city of Chengdu came to the platform to wave goodbye to their patients with banners wishing them to recover soon. It was the first train departing from Jiangyou. In the past few days, there have been at least 5 other train journeys departing from Mianyang, Deyang, carrying over 2,000 patients out of quake zone to other provinces and there will be more to be operated.
