(1 Jan 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBERS: 4017924, 4017936 Divers jumped into Rome's Tiber River on Friday to celebrate the new year, in a traditional event dating back to 1946. The annual tradition sees men and women taking the plunge from the Cavour Bridge in the Italian capital. This New Year's, three men plunged into the Tiber: Simone Carabella, Marco Fois and the crowd's favorite diver, the veteran 62-year-old Maurizio Palmulli. Meanwhile, thousands of Dutch revellers braved cold water on Friday to take a New Year's Day plunge in the North Sea. In the seaside district of Scheveningen, crowds jumped into the sea as part of a tradition thought to date back to the 1960's. The event is now held as a charity fundraiser with each swimmer required to buy a ticket. According to local media, more than 40 thousand people were expected to take part in similar events across the Netherlands.
