These images show how Ukrainian special forces destroyed a Russian electronic warfare system near Bakhmut. The footage shows the sophisticated piece of Russian equipment parked between two houses before it is suddenly hit by Ukrainian ordnance in a huge explosion that even damaged the buildings on either side of it. The images were obtained from the Office of Strategic Communications (StratCom) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Thursday, 2nd November, along with a statement saying: "The tactical group 'Medoids' of the 3rd Regiment of the SSO [Special Operations Forces] of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed an R-934 type EW of the occupiers in the area of temporarily occupied Svitlodarsk." Svitlodarsk is a city in the Bakhmut Raion, in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February 2022 in what the Kremlin is still calling a "special military operation". Today marks the 617th day of the full-scale war. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between 24th February 2022 and 2nd November 2023, Russia had lost about 302,420 personnel, 5,241 tanks, 9,877 armoured combat vehicles, 7,292 artillery units, 850 multiple launch rocket systems, 566 air defence systems, 322 warplanes, 324 helicopters, 5,488 drones, 1,549 cruise missiles, 20 warships, 1 submarine, 9,658 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 1,032 units of special equipment. Russia has claimed that its casualties have been much lower but provides infrequent updates on its latest figures. Valery Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, said on Wednesday that the war with Russia was transforming into a new stage of positional warfare involving static and attritional fighting. He warned that this could be beneficial to Moscow and allow it to rebuild its military power. Ukraine said on Wednesday that Russia has shelled more than a hundred settlements in the last 24 hours, which is more than in any single day so far this year. The South Korean National Intelligence Service believes that North Korea has sent more than a million artillery shells to Russia since August to help bolster Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. This is according to Yoo Sang-bum, a lawmaker in South Korea who attended a closed-door briefing on Wednesday with intelligence officials. Ukraine’s Air Force has said that Russia launched a score of drones and a missile in an attack that targeted military critical infrastructure, with regional officials saying the Kremenchuk oil refinery was hit. The Ukrainian Air Force said that it shot down 18 out of a total of 20 drones launched by Russia, as well as the missile, but the two remaining drones damaged the refinery in the Poltava region in central Ukraine, setting it on fire. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday: “The modern world is set up in such a way that it becomes accustomed to success too quickly. “When the full-scale aggression began, many in the world did not think Ukraine would endure.” Zelensky has rejected criticism that the counteroffensive against Russia is proceeding too slowly, saying that the war is not a Hollywood movie set.
