PM Calls for Peace Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has called for peace and tightened security measures around government buildings and media outlets following public protests against recent terror attacks by PKK militants. Protesters targeted HDP headquarters throughout the country. Outlawed PKK militants have killed 31 Turkish security officers in attacks over the last two days. Media reports say that on Tuesday, Turkish military units entered northern Iraq to pursue the group. PKK militants have killed more than 100 security officers in Turkey since July 11th. Mandatory Quotas for Refugees The president of the European Commission has announced plans for mandatory quotas to distribute refugees throughout the European Union. Jean-Claude Juncker’s plan also aims to allow an additional 120 thousand asylum seekers int o the EU. He told the European Parliament it was "not a time to take fright". Germany has taken in the majority of the refugees entering the EU and supports the plan. But Hungary, which is expected to take in 40 thousand of them by the end of the week, has suggested non-EU countries should instead deal with the influx. Maduro Sends 3K Soldiers to Border President has sent 3 thousand more soldiers to a border crossing he closed earlier this week. He began closing border checkpoints last month after three Venezuelan soldiers were shot and critically injured. Maduro blamed Colombian paramilitaries. He’s declared a ‘state of exception’ in three Zulia municipalities. The UN says 14 hundred Colombians have been deported and that another 15 thousand have fled. New Spider Species? Australian scientists may have discovered a new species of the funnel-web spider in the Booderee National Park. The funnel-web spider is considered one of the deadliest in the world. But a biologist from Australian National University says people shouldn’t be too worried because the funnel-web spider can’t jump. And while its bite can be fatal… there’s been an anti-venom available since the 1980s.
