During the day, various events will take place, including the traditional flag parade that will take place on its regular route. Waving the Israeli flag in the capital of Israel should go without saying, so we were clear on the matter from the first moment. I ask participants (of parade) to celebrate responsibly and respectfully." 5. Israel's government posing for photo with Jerusalem's mayor Moshe Lion (standing in first row on screen-right) 6. Lapid and Bennett STORYLINE: The Israeli cabinet held a special meeting on Sunday to mark 'Jerusalem Day,' celebrating Israel's capture of east Jerusalem, including the Old City, in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel has annexed east Jerusalem in a move that isn't internationally recognized, and it claims all of the city as its capital. In tense Jerusalem, some 3,000 Israeli police were deployed Sunday throughout the city ahead of a nationalistic Israeli march through the heart of the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. Palestinians, who claim east Jerusalem as their capital, see the march as a provocation. Last year, the parade helped trigger an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza militants. Early Sunday, ahead of the march, some 1,800 Jewish pilgrims visited the contested hilltop compound where the Al-Aqsa Mosque is situated, according to Israeli police. Al-Aqsa is the third-holiest site in Islam and serves as a powerful symbol for the Palestinians. The compound also is the holiest site for Jews, who call it the Temple Mount and revere it as the home of the biblical Temples. The competing claims to the site lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and have triggered numerous rounds of violence. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
