Wonder is a side-scrolling platform game for the Nintendo Switch, released worldwide on October 20, 2023. It is the 27th entry in the Super Mario series and the first brand-new 2D Mario game in nearly 11 years. The game introduces a refreshed art style inspired by 2D illustrations from Shigehisa Nakaue and marks the first appearance of Kevin Afghani as the voice of Mario and Luigi. First revealed during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, it later received its own dedicated presentation in August 2023. An enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is planned for release in Spring 2026 as part of the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebration. Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes place in the Flower Kingdom, which features eight distinct worlds: six main numbered worlds, the central Petal Isles that connects them, and the Special World. Each world includes a variety of level types, combining traditional stages with shorter bonus challenges such as Break Time!, Badge Challenges, races against Wigglers, enemy-filled KO Arenas, and Search Party levels that focus on exploration. A special bonus stage, Bonus: Coins Galore!, appears after a Game Over and allows players to collect large amounts of coins. Regular levels usually contain two Wonder Seeds—one earned through the Wonder Flower’s special effect and another by reaching the Goal Pole—with some levels hiding a third seed via secret exits. Bonus levels and palaces offer fewer seeds, while palaces instead reward Royal Seeds. Many levels also hide three 10-flower coins, which function similarly to collectible coins from previous Super Mario games.
