मकर संक्रांति का पर्व तिथिवाचक न होकर अयन-वाचक है । इस तिथि पर सूर्य देवता मकर राशि में प्रवेश करते है । मकर राशि के स्वामी शनिदेव हैं ,मान्यता है कि इस दिन भगवान सूर्य अपने पुत्र शनि से मिलने स्वयं उनके घर जाते हैं, अत: इस दिन को मकर संक्रान्ति के नाम से जाना जाता है । मकर संक्रांति के दिन ही मां गंगा धरती पर आईं थीं. महाराज भागीरथ ने गंगा जी में ही अपने पूर्वजों का तर्पण किया था. इसलिए इस पवित्र दिन पर गंगा नदी में स्नान करने का विशेष महत्व होता है | भीष्म पितामह ने भी महाभारत युद्ध के उपरांत इसी दिन देह त्याग किया था | संक्रांति को एक देवता माना गया है । मकर संक्रांति के के बाद से सूर्य उत्तर की ओर जाना प्रारंभ कर देते हैं, अर्थात मकर रेखावृत्त से कर्क रेखावृत्त की ओर जाना , नीचे से ऊपर जाना है । हिंदू पंचांग के अनुसार जब सूर्य मकर से मिथुन राशि तक भ्रमण करते है, तो इस काल खंड को उत्तरायण कहते हैं और जब सूर्य कर्क राशि से धनु राशि तक का भ्रमण करते है, तब इस समय को दक्षिणायन कहते हैं । दक्षिणायन को नकारात्मकता का और उत्तरायण को सकारात्मकता का प्रतीक माना जाता है । Modern Science में भी ‘नॉर्थ पोल’ को ‘पॉजिटिव’, तो ‘साउथ पोल’ को ‘नेगेटिव’ कहते हैं । उत्तरायण पर्व सूर्य के महत्व को भी उजागर करता है । सूर्य की गति से संबंधित होने के कारण यह पर्व हमारे जीवन में गति, नव चेतना, नव उत्साह और नव स्फूर्ति का प्रतीक है । इस समय से दिन बड़े होने लगते हैं और रातें छोटी । दिन बडे होने का अर्थ जीवन में अधिक सक्रियता है । इस पर्वकालमें किया गया दान एवं पुण्यकर्म विशेष फलप्रद होता है । नए बर्तन, वस्त्र, अन्न, तिल, गुड, गाय, स्वर्ण अथवा भूमिका यथाशक्ति दान करने का विधान बताया गया है । The festival of Makar Sankranti is not a date-reader but a ion-reader. On this date the Sun God enters Capricorn. The lord of Capricorn is Shani Dev, it is believed that on this day Lord Surya himself visits his son Shani at his house, hence this day is known as Makar Sankranti. Mother Ganga came to earth on the day of Makar Sankranti. Maharaj Bhagirath had offered his ancestors in the Ganges itself. Therefore, taking a bath in the Ganges river on this holy day has special significance. Bhishma Pitamah also left his body on this day after the Mahabharata war. Sankranti is considered a deity.After Makar Sankranti, the Sun starts moving towards the north, that is, going from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer, has to go up and down. According to the Hindu calendar, when the Sun travels from Capricorn to Gemini, then this period is called Uttarayan and when the Sun travels from Cancer to Sagittarius, then this time is called Dakshinayan. In Modern Science also 'North Pole' is called 'Positive', and 'South Pole' is called 'Negative'. The Uttarayan festival also highlights the importance of the sun. Being related to the movement of the sun, this festival is a symbol of speed, new consciousness, new enthusiasm and new energy in our life.
