Combi Lift (CL Salvage GmbH & Co. KG), Höppner Management & Consultant GmbH and Nehlsen Industrieservice GmbH & Co. KG joined forces to transport 59 overseas shipping containers full of highly poisonous chemicals from the Port of Beirut to Germany for further treatment and disposal. This project was planned in response to the devastating explosion that occurred a year ago. On 4 August 2020, 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded in Beirut’s harbour, reducing entire city neighbourhoods to rubble and ash. At least 6,500 Lebanese people lost their homes and livelihoods, and around 200 people died. Later that same year, in autumn of 2020, it was reported that a number of overseas shipping containers with highly poisonous chemicals were literally rotting in Beirut’s harbour. The Port of Beirut hired Combi Lift to handle a range of responsibilities in this special endeavour, including overall project implementation (financing, coordination with authorities, etc.) and project management.
