Germans protest against energy bill hikes, record inflation amid escalated Russia-Ukraine crisis

Tens of thousands of Germans took to the streets in Berlin on Saturday to protest against soaring energy prices and the crushing costs of living. Over 10,000 protesters gathered outside the Reichstag, demanding the government to take more effective measures to help residents. Data showed Germany's consumer price index(CPI) rose 10 percent year-on year in September, a record high since 1951. Tens of thousands of people were driven into poverty. Another massive protest was held in western Germany's Cologne. In addition to asking for an upper limit for increases in rent, protesters also demanded an increase in pensions and social benefits, as well as the re introduction of cheap transportation tickets at €9 ($8.80). Scholz announced last month a €200 billion aid package to help German citizens and businesses with energy prices, measures that other EU leaders argued they cannot afford. __________________ ShanghaiEye focuses on producing top-quality contents.
