Double Play: In that wonderful year 1998 two networks had the same idea. Find an up-and-coming comic, create a sitcom, and then, when stuck for a title, just use the star's last name. What could go wrong? • "DiResta': A transit cop, his funny job, and his funny family. John DiResta played the lead; he had been starring in an off-Broadway show about his job as a transit cop. Writers were uninterested in his input and the sitcom bore little relation to his real life. DiResta had given up his job and his pension to do the UPN series, but within a month it was tv's lowest rated show not on PAX. 15 eps. • 'Costello': A barmaid, her funny job, and her funny family. Stand-up comic Sue Costello played the lead. Hailed for being vulgar, crude, and shouty, Fox pulled the show after four episodes, with four more left in sitcom purgatory.
