Can Art Really Soothe Anxiety? Hint: YES! | 10-minute Creative Meditation with an Art Therapist

If you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, this brief 10-minute creative meditation for anxiety will help you slow down and calm your nervous system through simple mindful art making. In this guided experience, art therapist Ashleigh Gureckas (DKATI, RTC), founder of Discover Art Therapy, invites you to explore a gentle therapeutic art practice designed to help release tension, calm your mind, and reconnect with yourself through creativity. ✗ You don’t need any art experience or skill | beginner friendly! ✗ This is not about making something perfect or pretty. ✓ It’s about allowing your mind and body to settle through the process of creating and making space for calm. ____________________________________ Materials: You only need a few simple materials to follow along: • A piece of paper (8.5 x 11 or smaller works well for a 10-minute exercise) • Watercolour paint if you have it • A brush and water If you don’t have watercolour paint, you can also use: • markers • oil pastels • tempera paint sticks • anything you have accessible TIP: prepare your materials before starting so you can start along with the video. ____________________________________ What is the difference between art therapy and therapeutic art? Art therapy is a mental health profession facilitated by trained art therapists. It combines psychological theory with creative processes to support healing and self-understanding. Therapeutic art practices, like the creative meditation in this video, are art-based exercises inspired by art therapy principles that people can explore on their own for reflection, relaxation, and emotional regulation. ____________________________________ Why creative meditations can help anxiety and other discomforts: Creative processes engage the nervous system in a different way than traditional meditation. When we focus on colour, movement, and mark making, our attention shifts out of spiralling thoughts and into the present moment with something infront of us. We can see our emotions move out of our inner world and onto the page, giving us a sense of relief and distance from the discomfort. Moving our bodies slowly, calming our breath and enjoying the simple act of making art also inherently sends signals of safety to our body and mind. This can help reduce stress, calm the body, and bring a sense of clarity or emotional release. ____________________________________ About Discover Art Therapy: Hi!
