Richie is two years older than Melanie, so they didn't think there paths would cross. Even with 24,000 people at Auburn at that time, Melanie saw Richie at the library one night studying with her best friend's boyfriend and before they knew it they would eventually run into each other multiple times after that. Melanie knew she was going to marry Richie before they had even spoken to each other. One night at the bar Melanie asked Richie's friend to dance and he turned her down, but Richie overheard and bought Melanie a drink and danced the night away. Richie was living in Dallas and Melanie was living in Austin at the time of the proposal. Melanie drove up to Dallas one weekend and had dinner with Richie and his parents. When they came back to Richie's parents house that night, Melanie and Richie went outside to look at the stars through the telescope. Melanie looked into the telescope and Richie told her he needed to ask her something and when she turned around there were bright lights spelling out "Marry Me" and Richie was down on one knee. This day has been a long time coming!
