The biggest cleanup in the history of Brent

November 2022 saw the most significant cleanup ever done in the London Borough of Brent. Spread over 6 days of 3 consecutive weekends, this massive undertaking removed 18.4 tonnes (!!!) of rubbish from a section of the river's Northern bank, neighbouring Abbey Estate, in the Alperton area. Residents and opportunistic fly-tippers alike had been using the river and its banks as a rubbish dump for at least a decade and it was shocking to see just how much waste had accumulated there. Mountains. And it was all slowly going into the stream. Only time will tell if that behaviour will stop with the rubbish removed. Organised by CURB-Clean Up the River Brent and LAGER Can Ealing, the operation was a real success, drawing in dozens of volunteers. This is a stark reminder of the HUGE challenges some (if not all) boroughs in London face with respect to waste disposal, enforcement and, above all, environmental education and awareness.
