And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them: When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him: And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place: and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee, cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee. Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.” Key Points 1. Jesus teaches humility at the table so we learn humility in the heart. 2. Seeking honor traps us in comparison; choosing the low place frees us for love. 3. God Himself exalts the humble—honor received, not grasped, gives true joy. 4. Practical examen: In what ways do I angle for recognition? Where can I take the lowest place today? Reflection At a meal watched by critics, Jesus watches the guests and names the quiet scramble for status. He offers a different path: choose the lowest place and let God be the One who calls you higher. The disciple’s dignity is not self-assigned but received. Humility is not self-contempt; it is truthful self-forgetfulness that makes space for God and others. Today, take a hidden task, yield a preference, or praise another’s good work—concrete ways to loosen pride and learn the joy of the humble. Concluding Prayer Lord Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, teach me to choose the lowest place. Free me from the need to be first, from comparison, rivalry, and fear. Make me quick to honor others, content to be unseen, ready to serve. When You will, say to me, “Friend, come up higher,” that my life may glorify the Father. Through Mary’s intercession, form in me a humble heart, that I may love as You love. Amen.
