As a speech therapist, I wish more parents understood this!
Let me explain 👇🏼 Pediatricians are an amazing resource for the community! My girls’ pediatrician is incredible! He has helped me navigate our eczema and asthma journey and I can’t thank him enough… With that said, I think it’s time that we normalize speech therapist as the experts in speech and language. Pediatricians do not receive an extensive training in speech and language as do speech therapist. Some pediatricians are educated on the basics of speech and language and are able to guide you on your next steps. Unfortunately, many pediatricians are also giving out advice that is not accurate such as… 👎🏼“Boys talk later than girls” 👎🏽“Your child’s going to be confused if you teach them 2 languages at the same time” 👎🏾“Wait until 2-3 to see if your child catches up to their milestones” 👎🏻”He’s just lazy.” This misinformation is a problem. When I talk about supporting a child’s development if they are not reaching their milestones, way too often I am told… “My pediatrician says he’s fine” “My pediatrician says to wait until he is 2” “My pediatrician told me to only talk to him in 1 language and he will be fine” I’m still trying to figure out how some people would take speech and language advice from a pediatrician over a speech therapist… 🤣 Just needed to get that off my chest.
