UK to welcome foreign students post Brexit

(20 Feb 2017) Britain is on course to trigger Article 50 by a 31 March deadline, the UK Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union said on Monday. David Davis' comments in the Estonian capital Tallinn came as the House of Lords began a two-day debate on a bill authorising the government to trigger the EU divorce process. Opposition members of parliament's upper chamber are seeking changes to guarantee lawmakers a bigger say in the negotiations. The unelected Lords can't overrule the House of Commons, which has already passed the bill. But they could delay its passage, endangering the government's self-imposed 31 March deadline for triggering Brexit talks. Davis, who was speaking alongside the Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs Matti Maasikas, said Britain was not going to have a policy that was against its national interest when it came to students and highly qualified workers studying or working in the UK. "Do not expect to see a sharp sudden change in any of that, in fact don't expect to see any change in the global battle for talent," Davis said.
