Pwad: Target.wad Author: Tony Priest Date: 8th August 1994 Map: e1m1 Category: UV Maxdemo Executable: Doom.exe Time: 1:47 Why is this map called Target? Well, think of what the layout would look like from above, then remember a particular chain of department stores and you should have a good idea. This is a bad level, in a very generic 1994 fashion. STARTAN3 is the main visual theme. There's obvious tutti-frutti errors at the very start of the level. Secret areas are hidden behind misaligned textures, which is fine if a little obvious, but since half the rest of the level has misaligned textures, so that's no help after all. But I did find myself warming to the level after a bit. Mainly because of the level design, which keeps you returning to the main central arena, and each time you come back there are more monsters to take care of. So if you want to play it fast you can leave them all while collecting weapons and ammo then slaughter them bloodily at the end. I also saw the opportunity for a little speed trick - the blue key at 0:49 is on a platform that's meant to be lowered by a switch on the opposite wall, but if you strafe in at the right angle you can grab it straightaway. That saves about six seconds. The crusher passage is just a little too long to make it on the first try though, you'll need to wait for the ceiling to start rising again to get to the other side. In the end it turned out to be a good two minute blaster. Creaky visuals, but mindless fun. Download from /idgames here: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/inde...
