Explanation.—For the purposes of this Chapter,— (1) The expression "bank note" means a promissory note or commitment for the payment of money to the bearer on demand, issued by, or under the authority of, any person carrying on the business of banking in any part of the world. intended to be used as an equivalent or substitute for the money of any State or sovereign power; (2) "coin" shall have the same meaning as in section 2 of the Coinage Act, 2011 and includes metal used as money and stamped and issued by or under the authority of any State or sovereign power to be so used; (3) A person commits the offence of "counterfeiting a Government stamp" who counterfeits a genuine stamp of one denomination by making it appear to be a genuine stamp of another denomination; (4) A person commits the offence of counterfeiting a coin who, intending to defraud, or knowing that deception will be committed, causes a genuine coin to appear to be a different coin; and (5) The offence of "counterfeiting coin" includes reducing the weight or altering the composition, or altering the appearance of a coin.
