India Extends $450M Support Package, Pushes Tourism To Stabilise Sri Lanka’s Economy

India has announced a $450 million economic assistance package for Sri Lanka, marking a major step in New Delhi’s regional recovery and stability efforts. Speaking in Colombo, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the package includes a $350 million concessional line of credit and $100 million in grants, aimed at rebuilding Sri Lanka after recent natural disasters. The assistance follows Operation Sagar Bandhu, under which India delivered nearly 1,100 tonnes of relief material, including 14.5 tonnes of medicines and medical equipment. The initiative comes as Sri Lanka continues its recovery from the 2022 economic crisis, compounded by fresh disruptions caused by extreme weather events. Jaishankar said Narendra Modi has directed close coordination with the Sri Lanka government to prioritise rebuilding efforts. India also signalled stronger support through tourism promotion, increased foreign direct investment, and deeper economic engagement.
