(25 Jul 2020) Israeli Security Forces used water canons to break up a demonstration in Jerusalem on Saturday evening after protesters clashed with police. Police on horseback attempted to break-up and disperse the crowds as arrests were made on those refusing to leave the area. Thousands protested across the country on Saturday, angry over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the coronavirus crisis. The main protest took place outside Netanyahu's Jerusalem residence, with some demonstrators demanding his resignation. Israel appeared to have kept a first wave of virus infections at bay, but after what has been called a hasty and erratic reopening, saw infections shoot up. The country's economy has been battered by virus restrictions and the unemployment rate has skyrocketed. Protesters say the government's offers of financial assistance have been nowhere near enough. The protests came in the shadow of Netanyahu's corruption trial which resumed this month. He is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of scandals.
