Super Mario Sunshine (GCN + Switch (Super Mario 3D All-Stars)) Retrospective | Mario's Wind Waker

The GameCube had a very tumultuous early period- The Wind Waker is a very notable example of a game that uh, wasn’t done- and Mario didn’t fair a ton better, Super Mario Sunshine is a fantastic game, with great movement, cool tech, fantastic theming, and uh, 14 stars per level counting the blue coins, some of the jankiest side missions imaginable, and a lot of reuse squeezed out of every completed asset- it’s maybe 60% of a game, which really sucks because if it wasn’t… oof. Super Mario Sunshine was an early GameCube game, releasing in 2002, and would remain on that console for a number of years before seeing a port as a part of the Switch’s Super Mario 3D All-Stars in 2020, a controversial port that made the game look fantastic with higher resolution and full screen, but also missed some of the niche tech the GameCube's underutilized pressure sensitive triggers served, and will also be seeing a release on the Switch 2’s GameCube online service… at some point, which is a nice bit of accessibility when it comes about, soon hopefully.
