Staples from Scratch: My '50 New Things' Journey Begins!

Staples from Scratch: My '50 New Things' Journey Begins!

As part of my goal to try 50 new things in my 50s, I decided to learn a few kitchen skills I'd somehow never tried before: making cultured butter, queso fresco, and focaccia bread from scratch. This isn't a cooking tutorial or an attempt to recreate the past perfectly. I'm simply curious about how everyday foods are made, how previous generations might have prepared them at home, and what happens when we take the time to learn a skill we've always assumed was too difficult or complicated. Along the way, I discovered that butter isn't nearly as intimidating as I imagined, bread making still feels a little magical, and fresh cheese is much simpler than I expected. Some of these experiments were inspired by foods I miss from home, while others were simply things I wanted to understand better. Join me as I muddle my way through these three first-time kitchen experiments, explore a bit of food history, and reflect on why understanding where our food comes from might matter more than ever.
