Israel: boy, 15 dies in 'accidental shooting'

(21 Jun 2016) Israeli troops shot and killed a 15-year-old Palestinian in the West Bank early Tuesday and wounded four others in what the army said appeared to be an accidental shooting. The military said soldiers opened fire at a group of Palestinians who were hurling stones and firebombs at cars on a West Bank highway. However, based on an initial inquiry, it added that it appears that "uninvolved bystanders" were hit by mistake. Three Israeli civilians were also hurt. Wajih Ahmad, head of the local council in Beit Ur al-Tahta, said the teen, Mahmoud Badran, was killed when the car he was travelling in was hit by Israeli fire. Officials said four others were wounded, including two of Badran's brothers. The mayor said the group had been returning from a late-night pool party. Palestinian officials initially said the deceased was 14 years old, but later corrected themselves. His father, Raafat Badran, said he has heard the term "accidental shooting" before when the Israeli government has sought to explain similar incidents. He believes investigations into shootings like these are not conducted in a "serious" manner and that his son could have been alive if they had been more fruitful in the past.
