India's Richest City, Same Old Problem: Why Mumbai Keeps Flooding
Mumbai is once again battling its annual monsoon nightmare. Heavy overnight rainfall flooded roads, disrupted train services and triggered massive traffic snarls across India's financial capital. Areas including Hindmata, King's Circle, Sion, Andheri Subway, Vasai, Virar and parts of Navi Mumbai were submerged after some locations recorded more than 200 mm of rain within 24 hours. Meteorologists say the downpour was triggered by a rare convergence of three monsoon weather systems — a cyclonic circulation near the Mumbai coast, a mid-level atmospheric trough and a strong offshore trough along Maharashtra's coastline. Together, they pulled huge volumes of moisture from the Arabian Sea and unleashed intense rainfall over the city. But while the weather explains the rain, it does not fully explain the flooding. Every year, Mumbai faces the same questions about drainage capacity, unchecked urbanisation, concretisation, disappearing natural waterways, waste management and the city's preparedness for extreme weather events.
