Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Hires Susan Manheimer For Police Chief - John Arthur Jones III Weighs In John Arthur Jones III is Director of Community and Political Engagement from June 1, 2018 to present, in Oakland, California. Mr. Jones focusing on anti-displacement efforts including keeping black residents and black-owned businesses in Oakland as well as preserving the rich cultural history and legacy of Oakland. His bio reads as follows: As a father of three and born and raised in East Oakland, John is also formerly incarcerated, and after paroling was unemployed and homeless for eighteen months. John became involved in community organizing and advocacy to empower himself and others. John uses his personal story of pain, trauma, faith and transformation to inspire young people as well as fight for policy change. John has worked on several local and state campaigns and ballot measure and is a passionate and vocal advocate for affordable housing, employment, violence reduction, ending mass incarceration and racial equity. John has received a number of awards and accolades as a result of his labor. Mr. Jones has played a significant role in the formation of the Oakland Police Commission, serving as the Chairperson for the Selection Panel.
