Yesterday felt like a more typical day in the middle of winter for many, with highs ranging from the teens into the twenties. Not too much sunlight was available but in its place we were able to get very picturesque light snow across much of the Northland, with more hefty lake effect snow for the South Shore. This morning is starting off very similarly to yesterday as another round of light snow is moving through. Due to stronger winds, we can see visibilities take a substantial dip, along with more freezing drizzle potential to create slick spots. This is sufficient for Winter Weather Advisories to be in place until noon today for much of the Northland. We can see more rounds of snow early tomorrow for the New Year and early Saturday as well. Overall, snow totals will stay limited like they did yesterday outside of the South Shore. The winds will continue to be blustery today, especially along the North Shore and around Lake Superior in general. This will bring in chilly air, with afternoon temperatures likely topping out in the single digits and lower teens for many. Overnight lows can dip well below zero, and with the winds, can produce wind chills as cold as -40 degrees. This is why we have Cold Weather Advisories in place form midnight into tomorrow morning for northern Minnesota. We will stay on the cool side to end the week but temperatures will gradually warm into early next week, where highs will become a bit above normal. This is also the time where we can see another storm system move through. The system doesn’t look like it will cause much disruption as of now, but we will be keeping an eye out for any changes.
