United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday extended New Year greetings to the Chinese community as their traditional Spring Festival approaches. Conveying his wishes in a video, he hoped the upcoming Year of the Rooster would be an auspicious year for all people in the world. "The Year of the Rooster symbolizes early starts and new beginnings. It stresses the importance of energy, determination and a strong sense of responsibility at work. These are inspiring attributes to guide us in troubled times," he said. He hoped for peace in the new year and said, "we must work together to overcome conflicts, human rights abuses, poverty and other crises." He said China is playing a vital role for the UN and he welcomes China's commitment to multi-lateralism and to strive to advance our common goals for the future before concluding his message in Chinese: "Xin Nian Kuai Le (Happy New Year)!" The Spring Festival, the most important festival for the Chinese people, falls on January 28 this year, the first day of the 2017 Chinese lunar calendar.
