There are many biblical accounts that could easily leave you scratching your head and wondering, “Why would God do that?’ As a result many assert that God is basically a monster. In a recent podcast, we dealt with one example: God telling Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. What kind of God would require such a thing? They say only a monster would do that. Agreed. Only a monster would do that. One conveniently overlooked detail. God didn’t intend or allow Abraham to kill to Isaac. Fact: God had an angel and an animal sacrifice standing ready. So, was this a game? No. Abraham followed God out of an environment of hideous idolatry where sacrificing children to images of heathen gods was common. God’s point was to dramatically show Abraham that He did NOT desire or require the taking of innocent life but was instead the preserver of life. This foreshadowed Jesus giving his life to preserve all humanity. What about other instances of sacrifice? What is God's position on killing and lying?
