In this video I take you for a drive in my new BMW M340i, I includes some exhaust clips and acceleration clips along with driving impressions etc. I compare my 2020 BMW M340i with the B58 engine to my 2008 BMW 335i with the N54 engine. The main subject of this video is how BMWs are calibrated to only allow for perfection. What that means is the control systems are overly sensitive and are designed to preserve a perfect driving experience. They are not calibrated to allow for wear and to allow minor faults to be ignored which could lead to a diluted experience. You're less likely to have a major failure given how sensitive the systems are. It may seem like there is always something wrong and the car isn't reliable but if you keep fixing things when the car tells you the car will last for 200K + miles. Your BMW will provide you with soft warnings letting you know of a potential issue, your average car would only tell you once something major is wrong and by that time it's too late and the car is ready for the junkyard. So due to the sophistication of CAN based control systems on BMWs I believe the they are inherently more reliable if you work on them yourself and stay on top of every warning and rectify the issue in a timely manner.
