Japan plans to release wastewater from nuclear power plant into ocean
A United Nations watchdog has approved Japan’s plan to release wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean. In 2011, three reactors in the plant flooded after a tsunami was triggered by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake. The facility is now running out of space to store water used to cool the nuclear reactors. Despite the International Atomic Energy Agency green-lighting the release – China and South Korea are opposed to the plan.
