What is Parity of a Wave function? (Odd / Even parity examples)

What is parity of Wave function? If you stand in front of a mirror, your left hand and right hand will get inverted. Parity operation is kind of similar. Here, you invert the coordinate system with respect to the origin, so that the x, y, z coordinates are replaced with -x, -y, and -z. What happens to the wave function under such parity operation, or space reflection? Well most potentials are symmetric with respect to reflection across the origin, i.e. V(- x) = V(x) For such potentials, the probability distribution is also same in both cases. This leads to two possibilities: odd parity and even parity wave functions. Either the wave function is symmetric with respect to reflection, or the wave function is anti-symmetric with respect to reflection. We can show this by taking a simple example of a particle in an infinite square well potential. The wave function solutions of such a potential consist of alternate even and odd parity wave functions. Other examples include the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom and also the atomic nucleus. ▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱ Support💖  / dibyajyotidas   Donate🤝🏻https://paypal.me/FortheLoveofPhysics Telegram - https://t.me/FortheLoveofPhysicsYT ▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱ Follow my other videos here... •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• NUCLEAR AND PARTICLE PHYSICS - Series : •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 1) What is Nuclear Physics? ►    • What is Nuclear Physics? (LECTURE SERIES)   2) Nuclear Size / Radius ►    • Nuclear Size / Radius   3) Quantization of Angular Momentum ►    • What is Quantization of Angular Momentum? ...   4) Nuclear Spin and Angular Momentum ►    • Nuclear Spin and Angular Momentum   5) Nuclear Magnetic Moment ►    • Nuclear Magnetic Moment   6) Binding Energy of Nucleus & BE Curve ►    • What is Nuclear Binding Energy? (and BE pe...   7) Parity of Wave function ►    • What is Parity of a Wave function? (Odd / ...   8) Symmetric & Anti symmetric Wave func ►    • Symmetric and Anti-symmetric Wave functions   9) Liquid Drop Model of Nucleus ►    • Liquid Drop Model of Nucleus ( Binding Ene...   10) Corrections to Liquid Drop Model ►    • Corrections to Liquid Drop Model / Semi Em...   11) NZ Graph (& Maximizing BE) ►    • What is NZ Graph? | Maximizing Binding Energy   12) Fermi Energy of Nucleus ►    • Fermi Energy of Nucleus (Derivation)   13) Fermi Gas Model of Nucleus ►    • Fermi Gas Model of Nucleus   14) Shell Model of Nucleus ►    • Shell Model of Nucleus   15) Nature of (Strong) Nuclear Force) ►    • Nature of (Strong) Nuclear Force   16) Alpha, Beta & Gamma Decay ►    • Alpha, Beta & Gamma Decay [Complete Discus...   17) Gamow's Theory of Alpha Decay ►    • Gamow's Theory of Alpha Decay AND Geiger N...   18) Gamow's Theory (DERIVATION) ►    • Gamow's Theory of Alpha Decay - Full Deriv...   19) Q Value and KE of Alpha Decay ►    • Q-Value | KE of Alpha Decay (Kinematics)   20) Beta Decay & Neutrino Hypothesis ►    • Beta Decay & Neutrino Hypothesis !! (VIOLA...   21) Radioactive Decay Law ►    • What is Radioactive Decay? Half Life | Dec...   22) Nuclear Cross Section ►    • Nuclear Cross Section Explained   23) Interaction of Nuclear Radiation with Matter ►    • Interaction of Nuclear Radiation with Matter   24) What is Cherenkov Radiaton? ►    • Cherenkov Radiation (Made Simple)   25) Nuclear Detectors ►    • Nuclear Detectors - Ionization Chamber & P...   26) Geiger Muller Counter ►    • What is GM Counter? - Geiger Muller Counter   27) Scintillation Detector ►    • What is a Scintillation Detector? Explained   28) Semiconductor Detectors ►    • What are Semiconductor Detectors?   29) What are Accelerators? ►    • What are Accelerators? + Electrostatic Par...   30) Van de Graaff Generator ►    • Van de Graaff | Tandem & Pelletron Particl...   31) Linear Accelerator ►    • Linear Particle Accelerator (Principle, Co...   32) Cyclotron ►    • Cyclotron (Principle, Construction, Workin...   33) Synchrotron ►    • Cyclotron & Synchrotron (Particle Accelera...   34) Betatron ►    • Cyclotron & Synchrotron (Particle Accelera...   35) Fission & Fusion ►    • Nuclear Fission and Fusion | What role doe...   36) Proton-Proton & CNO Cycle ►    • Proton Proton Cycle & CNO Cycle   37) Meson Theory of Nuclear Forces ►    • Meson Theory of Nuclear Forces & Estimatio...   ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• NUCLEAR PHYSICS - PLAYLIST    • Nuclear Physics   ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #NuclearPhysics
