How to Adjust the Fit & Focus of Binoculars for Bird Watchers

Bill Thompson, III, and Ben Lizdas of Bird Watcher's Digest offer tips for birders on how to adjust their binoculars' fit and focus. This how-to video is proudly sponsored by Zeiss. Because bird watchers come in all shapes and sizes, they must follow a series of steps to adjust their binoculars for the best viewing experience. If you're an eyeglass wearer, retract the twist-up eyecups to bring the ocular lenses closer to the surface of your glasses. People without glasses need to twist the eyecups out to avoid getting their eyes too close to the ocular lenses. After the eyecups are in position, the binocular's bridge should be adjusted to accommodate the distance between your eyes, or the interpupillary distance. The third step is to turn the central focus wheel to move the barrels in unison, allowing you to view faraway objects like flying raptors or closer objects such as hummingbirds. Finally, the diopter allows you to adjust the focus of the right ocular barrel separately from the left side to accommodate differences in visual acuity between your two eyes. The diopter is located on the right barrel of the Zeiss Conquest HD and other binoculars with a central focus wheel. In Zeiss's premium Victory SF line, the diopter is integrated in the central focus mechanism. The diopter does not need to be changed once it has been set to accommodate your eyesight. Keep watching to learn more about how to precisely adjust your binocular's focus to obtain the sharpest image possible. You'll also get tips on how to spot a bird with your binocular, look for landmarks as a reference point, and adopt the proper stance for optimal bird watching.
