Synthesis of isopropylnitrite

Synthesis of isopropylnitrite

Isopropylnitrite is an iportant precursor to potassium azide which i'll be making in the next video. Be careful the vapours (b.p. 39°C) causes headaches and incrase blood pressure. It's made easily by reacting 2-propanol/hydrochloric acid with sodium nitrite in low temperatures. Lit.: Small-Scale Synthesis of Laboratory Reagents with Reaction Modeling Notes: Note 1 -- Be careful, both the ester and sodium nitrite are quite toxic. Note 2 -- This should be done prior to the reaction and no external cooling will be necessary. I didn't get everything to dissolve, but it didn't matter in the reaction it will dissolve later. Note 3 -- The solution needs to be cooled or you will get vigorous eruption of CO2.
