As we continue to "Exit The Freeway" we found ourselves LOVING all that Maine had to offer! We even stayed there an extra 2 days longer than we were planning! And if you are adventure seekers like us...this is the most dangerous trail in Acadia National Park! It offers absolutely breath taking views of Frenchman Bay and the Atlantic Ocean! Even though it is categorized as a "Non-technical hike", it is actually considered by locals as more of a "climb" than a trail. It is a 1.5 mile climb up Champlain Mountain with an elevation gain of about 1072 feet. If you have a fear of heights, or experience vertigo, this trail is NOT for you! This trail is more of a free climb with no ropes or harnesses. You traverse the trail using metal rungs and ladders that are bolted into the rock face. During the summer, the trail can get very busy, however, when we visited it in late September, we only ran into one other couple and had the trail to ourselves. If hiking this trail, leave your poles behind...you won't need them. Also, VERY IMPORTANT: This trail is usually closed between March 15 and August 15 for peregrine falcon nesting so if you plan on being there during this time...don't plan on visiting this trail.
