Pain is a subjective response; it varies from person to person and also varies according to the stress or apprehension of the patient. Most of the patients who come to us for IVF, suffered from infertility for a long period. So, they are already very much stressed. To add with it, there are a good number of people, who without knowing the pros and cons of IVF process, continue to discourage them, which add to this stress level. IVF involves financial planning, and it is a process where one cannot expect to get 100 percent success. So, it involves a situation, almost like one has to undergo a board examination, where there is a chance of failure. Altogether it involves lots of mental stress. Positive boosting and empathetic support are very much required from the staff and medical personnel who are involved in this treatment to decrease the stress level of the couple. Does IVF cause physical pain? IVF process can be grossly divided into 3 parts for better understanding. Part 1: Ovarian stimulation and monitoring, Part 2: Ovum pick up and Part 3: Embryo transfer. Part 1 or ovarian stimulation involves daily injections for 10 to 15 days on average. Most of the injections are subcutaneous injections, like insulin injection. They cause very little pain. Monitoring by TVS does not cause pain. Part 2 or ovum pick up is done under anaesthesia or sedation, so patient does not experience any pain. Part 3 or Embryo transfer is also a painless process and does not involve pain. Very rarely if there is some difficulty to negotiate, it can be done under anaesthesia. So, don't be afraid, don't be misguided. Take your decision and stick to it.
