It came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System on September 1988. This game differs from most other Mario games as you can play four playable characters--Mario, Luigi, Toad or Princess Toadstool with each character specializing in unique abilities. The other major difference of this game is enemies don't get defeated by jumping on them. Instead they are defeated by picking them up and throwing them at other enemies or objects. This game came out after Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, which only saw a release in Japan as American players found The Lost Levels too difficult. As a result, Nintendo redeveloped a Japanese game Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game. After receiving positively, the game saw a remake on Super Mario All-Stars on August 1, 1993, as well as another remake on Super Mario Advance on June 11, 2001.
