Dental implant complications and failure is becoming more common as the number of implants placed increases. According to Alghamadi, H. et.al.(Ref: The development and future of dental implants. Alghamadi, H. et.al. Dental Materials Journal (2020) March;39(2):167-172) the dental implant industry is expected to reach 13 billion dollars world wide in 2023. Dental implant complications and failure are divided into below the gum line problems versus above the gum line problems. Above the gum line problems are mechanical complications, whereas below the gum line complications are biological in nature. Biological complications are harder to deal with. Biological complications can be divided into peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis. Risk factors such as smoking and diabetes increase the chance of implant failure.
