Don't Sweat the Technique By Eric B. & Rakim (Drum Demonstration)

When this record came out, I used to listen to it repeatedly, losing myself Eric B's incredible jacket he dons on the cover. The bass lines of the Eric B. & Rakim catalogue are always phenomenal and come from great records. Listening to them made me wise to a world of jazz and funk before I had really started listening to those artists. In this drum video, I try to explain how the sample lines up with the main beat that plays throughout the song. bass line is from a single measure of music during the bass solo on Queen of the Nile by Young-Holt Unlimited, a Chicago based piano trio from the late 60's and early 70's. It's worth mentioning that there is a Kool & The Gang sample that comes in throughout the song but I elected to focus on the bass line and cross stick part because it goes against the other beat and they line up in a really nice way and although they are samples and line up perfectly on the record, when one tries to do this in real life there is always a human element. Working on parts like this is a great way to practice with something else going that's not a metronome, and can be kind of tricky. Eric B. & Rakim are listed as the producers for the entire album, but the album’s liner notes also list three “Production Coordinators,” including the legendary Paul “Large Professor” Mitchell, “Chams” Kerwin Young (a Public Enemy affiliate and Bomb Squad collaborator), and Richard “Lord of the Board” Simmons (who did production work for artists like Cooley Live and Me Phi Me) Incidentally, this Young Holt Unlimited song was also sampled by Ice-T and NWA around the same period. As always, I am playing Istanbul Agop Cymbals and Promark Sticks. https://istanbulcymbals.com/artists/1... https://www.daddario.com/products/per...
