The story takes place a year after the events of Dawn of War II, following the Blood Ravens Space Marine chapter as they respond to the sudden reappearance of the frozen planet Aurelia, long thought lost to the Warp. As the campaign unfolds, the player discovers a sinister Chaos corruption spreading among the ranks of the Blood Ravens, leading to internal betrayal and moral conflict. A new “Corruption” mechanic tracks the player’s decisions and equipment can either maintain purity or drive squads toward Chaos, ultimately influencing the game’s ending and the fate of the chapter. The gameplay retains the tactical, squad-based real-time strategy focus of its predecessor, emphasizing small-unit tactics and character customization over base-building. Chaos Rising raises the level cap from 20 to 30, introduces new abilities and wargear, and adds the Chaos Space Marines as a new playable faction in multiplayer. Each of the existing races also gains new units, along with expanded maps and modes. Released on Microsoft Windows, and later on macOS and Linux, the expansion received generally positive reviews from critics. It was praised for its engaging narrative, well-balanced additions to multiplayer, and meaningful moral choices, though some noted the short campaign length.
